Embedding Resilience and Reconciliation: A Tool for Open Public Spaces

By Evergreen, Dark Matter Labs, 7GenCities and TreesAI

An approach to evaluating open public spaces, embedding principles of Truth and Reconciliation, enhancing climate resilience, and supporting community wellbeing.

The Embedding Resilience and Reconciliation Tool is designed to assess and compare open public spaces within a community to understand climate-related risks and community and social wellbeing impacts. The 10-step process measures both the capacity of the public spaces being assessed to address climate change impacts and the ability of public spaces to meet community needs.

The Embedding Resilience and Reconciliation Tool recognizes the relationship between place and nature, reflecting Indigenous perspectives that view green, open spaces not merely as resources or climate technical assets, but as integral parts of a relational and kincentric whole.

This tool is suitable for small to midsize municipalities and other community organizations that may lack extensive geospatial data but have an urgent need to enhance their open public spaces.

The Public Space Evaluation Toolkit was generously supported by TD Bank Group and Manulife.
