How wireless internet, digital screens, smart street furniture and other new technologies are changing our parks and public spaces.

Communities come together in parks, plazas, squares, streets, sidewalks and laneways. It is here that we interact with our friends, neighbours and strangers. COVID-19 only further emphasized the importance of these spaces to our wellbeing and our quality of life.

Smart city technologies such as wireless internet, digital screens and smart street furniture are changing our experiences in these spaces. These tools offer opportunities for data collection, real-time responsiveness and civic participation. However, they also raise key concerns about privacy, data management, and privatization.
